Are You A Closet Toy Collector?

| August 9, 2014

Toy collecting by adults is not a widely accepted hobby.   Many of us who go to stores and purchase our latest toys will loudly proclaim, or say to an excess, how much our kids, nieces, nephews, etc. are going to like the toys that we’re buying them.

In all actuality, you’re really buying the toys for yourself.  However, you need to keep that under wraps, right?  What would the cute guy or girl who is actually shopping with their kid think about you if you let them know that you were a toy collector and if you didn’t make this purchase today it would haunt you for the rest of the week.  You just gotta’ have it!

That’s why many adult toy collectors choose to keep their toy collecting hobby to themselves.  They remain private, hiding their hobby in a dark closet.

The fact of the matter is that it is a lot more comfortable to go to a hobby or toy shop to make your purchases and place your pre-orders.  At least there you know that you’ll be accepted by the rest of Geek-Dom.

The stigma, is there, make no mistake.  Toy collectors are “geeks”, “obsessive” and “addicted to being children”.

Thankfully, in the last 10 years or so, some of that stigma has started to fade and we geeks and nerds are almost a part of mainstream society and being accepted, sometimes even preferred!  With television shows like Big Bang Theory the world is finding out that beyond the comic book stores, toy markets and hobby shops many of us geeks are just guys and gals like everyone else.  We work, we have relationships, we prefer a very particular menu , etc.

But, yes, we do obsess over our toys and what our next purchase will be.  We dust figurines, display statues and seek out ever cooler parts of our toy collections that we don’t have.
